Differences And Similarities Between CPVC and UPVC Pipes and Fittings

Among the different plastic materials for pipes and fittings, polyvinyl chloride or PVC is one of the preferred ones. Over the decades since its introduction, PVC has also been modified in composition and structure to derive the unplasticized PVC and the chlorinated PVC, uPVC and CPVC respectively. Each of these pipe materials has its own properties, and being derivatives of PVC, they also have some similarities while also having some differences in their properties. Let us try and understand the differences and similarities between the CPVC and uPVC pipes and fittings from the aspect of their different properties:
1. Service life: Since both CPVC and uPVC are modifications of PVC plumbing pipes and fittings, they both have excellent service life. They both have demonstrated service life of over 5 decades, going up to as high as 100 years. They are also not easily prone to damage by cracks and leaks.

2. Jointing systems: uPVC pipes and fittings are fused together using threaded mechanical couplings and secured with solvent cement. CPVC pipes and fittings are also secured using the mechanical couplings, though they may not always require solvent cement for leakproof joints.

3. Corrosion resistance: Both uPVC and CPVC show the high chemical resistance of PVC pipes and fittings. They are resistant to corrosive action of most types of acids, bases and salts and also resist the action of natural corrosive reagents which makes them the preferred choice of drainage pipe manufacturers.

4. UV resistance: CPVC pipes and fittings are not resistant to the ultraviolet radiation and can be damaged if they are exposed to UV rays for a long time. However, uPVC pipes and fittings show high resistance to UV rays which makes them suitable for outdoor installations as well.

5. Applications: CPVC pipes and fittings are well suited for hot water applications as well owing to the high temperature resistance of 0 to 93°C. However, uPVC pipes and fittings can be warped by hot water and hence are inadvisable for use in heating and cooling systems.
